How to Connect to the Internet with our ADSL

In order to enjoy the benefits of accessing always on, high speed internet with an Afrihost ADSL account you must:

  1. Have a telephone landline from Telkom.
    If you have an existing telephone line from Telkom you don't need an additional line for ADSL, as you can still make and receive calls while your ADSL is connected. If you do not have a landline then you need to get one through Telkom.
  2. Verify your Telkom exchange and line supports ADSL.
    Unfortunately not all Telkom lines support ADSL. However, the good news is that most lines do support ADSL ( click here to check whether your exchange & line is ADSL ready)
  3. Ask Telkom to enable your line for ADSL.
    To enable your line you then need to contact Telkom and they will verify that your telephone exchange is capable of supporting the ADSL service. If they determine that you can obtain the ADSL service, it can take upwards of a month before they can upgrade your line.
  4. Have an ADSL modem or router.
    These modems/routers can be obtained either directly from Telkom through a contract, or otherwise a far wider selection can be purchased from your local computer hardware supplier.
  5. Sign up for your Afrihost ADSL Plan.
    We will then provide you with both local and international access to the Internet and a separate e-mail inbox for your use. Simply add your Afrihost.co.za username and password to your router and you are ready to go!

There are 2 kinds of Afrihost ADSL Packages available:

  1. Fixed Traffic Cap Monthly Packages (view here)
    Fixed Cap accounts come in 1,2,3,5,10,20 and 30 GB increments. All fixed cap accounts are hard capped and once your bandwidth quota is reached you are unable to access the internet. To make sure this doesn't happen you can check your monthly usage at any time in your Afrihost Client Zone and if you need more bandwidth you can easily top up via credit card or debit order. Your monthly bandwidth in these packages are available to be used from the 1st to the last day of each month. Any unused traffic does not carry over into the next month.
  2. Prepaid Packages (view here)
    Prepaid accounts are "Pay as you go" accounts. You can manage your bandwidth usage as you use it. You can use the bandwidth that you buy as fast or as slowly as you like. It will always be available for your use and does not expire. All unused bandwidth will carry over from month to month if it is not used.

You can control your ADSL services via the Client Zone:

  1. You can view your current ADSL usage as well as how much usage credit you still have available to you in any given month. Simply login, click on the "My Connectivity" link and then click the icon of the graphs. Our ADSL usage statistics currently indicate your daily usage for the month.
  2. You can upgrade or downgrade once a month from within your Client Zone (or via our call centre)
  3. You can access your full account payment history and download Account Statements and Tax Invoices whenever you need to.
  4. Our ADSL accounts come with a e-mail box included. Your email will be in the format (your name)@afrihost.co.za
  5. You can also setup you other email addresses @afrihost.co.za in your Client Zone by clicking on the "My Connectivity" link and then clicking on the envelope icon.
  6. Our e-mail service comes with POP/IMAP and SMTP access as well as web-based access in instances where you may not have access to your own computer. The caps are calculated by totalling both the incoming and outgoing traffic for your connection on an hourly basis.
